Will Google Stadia Ever Come to Australia?

Everything you need to know about Google’s cloud gaming platform.
In November 2019, Google ventured into video game streaming by launching their own platform, Google Stadia. The new platform allowed gamers to stream cloud-based games straight to their TV, smartphone, tablet and computer.
Fast forward almost two years and Google Stadia is still not available in Australia, leaving many Aussies wondering if it ever will be.
Let’s dive into Google Stadia and answer all the questions you have about it.
What is Google Stadia?
Google Stadia is one of many cloud-based gaming platforms that are hitting the market.
Instead of needing a physical copy of a game, cloud-based gaming streams games on a remote server somewhere else in the world instead of through your PlayStation, Xbox or other device.
So, when you click to play a game on Stadia, Google’s servers handle all the processing and beam the game to you via the cloud.
No downloads, no installs; just gaming in an instant.
If you’re device can run Google Chrome, it can use Stadia. Pretty cool, right?
Depending on how good your internet is, you could be streaming 4K quality at 60fps.
How many games does Google Stadia have?
Google Stadia has over 160 games and that list keeps growing.
The Stadia library boasts an impressive list with gamers having access to play titles like Cyberpunk2077, Doom Eternal, FIFA 21, the Hitman series, Marvel’s Avengers, NBA 2K21, Red Dead Redemption 2, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the Assassin’s Creed series.
The fact you can play any one of those games on your phone is just insane.

Will Google Stadia ever come to Australia?
Like most things that launch around the world, Google Stadia isn’t available in Australia yet.
Worse still, Google haven’t announced any plans to expand Stadia into Australia either. For now, Stadia remains available in 22 countries across North America and Europe.
Fingers crossed they will add Australia to that list soon.
If it does come to Australia, how much will it cost?
There are two tiers for Google Stadia. The free tier offers 1080p streaming but you need to buy the games to play them.
Tier two is Stadia Pro, and for $US10 per month you get 4K streaming and access to play any game for free.
On top of that if you want to play Stadia on your TV then Google sell the Premiere Edition which includes a Chromecast Ultra and the Google Stadia controller for $US99.99.
Is Google Stadia worth getting?
Even if Google Stadia does debut in Australia it might not be the greatest value for money... yet.
To start with, you need to make sure you're internet is fast, otherwise that ultimate streaming experience will lag big time.
The game library is growing but nowhere near as big as PlayStation Now's 700-game library or NVIDIA's GeForce's mammoth library with over 2,000 games.
Finally, if you're looking to play against others online, Stadia's multiplayer lobbies are often empty, so consider this before you commit to Google Stadia (if it ever becomes available down under).
