Tessa Thompson Wanted as Disney’s Lady for "Lady and the Tramp"

Tessa Thompson Wanted as Disney’s Lady for "Lady and the Tramp"

We endorse this casting.

With the cameras now rolling on their live-action Mulan remake, it’s time for Disney to turn its attention to one of its remaining, unadapted animated films.

According to Collider, the Mouse House is close to snagging a second human for its Lady and the Tramp do-over (which already has Justin Theroux as the titular Tramp).

That lucky Lady: Tessa Thompson.

Thompson, best known for (deep breath) Creed, Thor: Ragnarok, Westworld, Sorry to Bother You and your fave Janelle Monáe music videos, is apparently in final negotiations to voice the fancy cocker spaniel who gets to slurp pasta opposite a mongrel in a restaurant’s back alley (err, it’s more romantic than it sounds).

Benedict Wong will voice the bulldog, Bull, and Kiersey Clemons will play Darling, Lady and the Tramp’s owner.

Though it’s being called a "live-action" remake, Lady and the Tramp will be similar to the studio’s Jungle Book and upcoming Lion King, with CGI animals and backgrounds occasionally interacting with humans or tangible environments.

The biggest difference between them, however, is that Lady and the Tramp won’t be hitting cinemas. It will instead debut exclusively on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, which is being set up as a rival to Netflix.

So, look for Tessa and Justin’s canine romance sometime after the streaming service launches in 2019.
