We're Not Worthy: Janelle Monáe Is Back and She's Gone Full "San Junipero"

Heaven truly is a place on Earth.

If you had asked us at the end of 2017 what the world needed most in the new year, the answer would have come swiftly: More music from Janelle Monáe.

It seemed that the once-and-former ArchAndroid had left music behind to build on her (actually impressive) acting career, after appearing in two Best Picture nominees (Hidden Figures and Moonlight, the latter of which actually won the top Oscar, you may remember).

But, mercifully, Ms. Monáe has heard our prayers, and returned with the ultimate one-two punch, dropping two new songs and music videos ahead of the release of her next album, Dirty Computer, on 27 April.

(Language warning.)

The Prince-inspired "Make Me Feel" is certain to be the one that captures most imaginations, what with its gender-fluid, "San Junipero"-esque music video and coy references to queerness (which Monáe has teased throughout her career).

She may have even revealed her inspiration for the clip all the way back in September.

The clip also stars Thor: Ragnarok fave Tessa Thompson as one of Janelle's potential romantic partners, so that should keep Tumblr busy for a few months.

However, you shouldn't sleep on the slightly lower-key second video for "Django Jane", which still forcefully reiterates her status as one of rap's pre-eminent personalities.

Last week, we prematurely called Kendrick Lamar's videos from the Black Panther soundtrack the year's best. (Yes, we know it's February.)

But we can admit when we're wrong. Janelle Monáe has reclaimed the throne. (Yes, we know it's still February.)

And since her last album The Electric Lady was, in this writer's opinion, 2013's best album, we've got high hopes for Dirty Computer too.
