How to Get Disney+ in Australia

How to Get Disney+ in Australia

Your wish is its command.

The release date and pricing model for Disney+ has been revealed, much like baby Simba being held aloft by Rafiki on Pride Rock.

Disney+, of course, is the yuuuge new streaming service that’ll boast everything the light touches, AKA just about anything owned by Disney, including Pixar, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars.

Besides being the home to all your fave Disney flicks, Disney+ will also host original Marvel and Star Wars shows (like WandaVision and The Mandalorian), a High School Musical series, and even Fox content like The Simpsons (following Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox).

Basically, you’ll have a lot to get through, not even including original Disney movies like Lady and the Tramp.

So, when does Disney+ arrive in Australia?

The highly anticipated streaming service will debut first in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands on 12 November 2019.

But fret not, because Australia and New Zealand aren’t far behind. We’ll get Disney+ on 19 November, via Apple devices like iPhones, iPads and Apple TV; Google devices such as Android phones and Chromecast; the gaming platforms Xbox One and PlayStation 4; and Roku devices.

Everyone else, you’re gonna have to wait a little bit longer, though Disney reckons they should get to you within "the first two years".

How much is it gonna cost me?

Disney+ will be available on monthly and annual subscription plans. In Australia, you can either pay $8.99 a month, or $89.99 a year. It’s a bit pricier in New Zealand, at $NZD9.99 a month and $NZD99.99 a year.

Obviously, you’ll have to weigh up which of your streaming subscriptions are worth keeping with this new competitor in the market. Netflix, in particular, is no doubt bracing itself for the arrival of Disney+.

Its Aussie rival, Stan, will also likely lose its exclusive grasp on Disney and Marvel movies (which we’ve suspected ever since Disney pulled them all from Netflix).

However, apparently Foxtel, Stan, Telstra, Optus, Woolworths and Coles are all lobbying to "partner" with Disney+ down under, to enhance their offering. (For instance, in the US, a subscription to Disney+ can also be packaged with Hulu and ESPN, but those options aren’t available in Australia.) Maybe a partnership could mean even more content for subscribers.

Still, nothing’s official just yet.

Until then, set your alarms for 19 November, or check out the countdown on the official Disney+ page.
