Here’s the Official Meaning Behind Groot’s Last Line from "Avengers: Infinity War", If You Want to Sob Openly

Spoilers ahead, obviously.

As most of the world knows by now, a lot of Avengers die at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

(Mark Ruffalo warned us a year ago, and we didn’t even listen!)

It’s been reported that at least one of the presumed dead Avengers actually made it out of the bloodbath alive. But that one Avenger was not Groot, the tree-teen from Guardians of the Galaxy.

This technically marks Groot’s second death, since he passed at the end of GOTG and was replaced by a new, baby Groot, according to director James Gunn.

Gunn is now back with some more, equally devastating news for fans, responding to a Tweet asking him, "what Groot’s last line is at the end of the movie?"

Now, even casual punters will probably say, "Duh, it’s 'I am Groot'."

But Gunn has an inside track on Groot’s intentions, with the meaning behind Groot’s singular line of dialogue often included in the scripts.

And so, it is with a heavy heart that we reveal what Groot actually meant when he was disintegrating as a result of Thanos’ murderous finger snap.

Yep, he meant to say, "Dad". That means Groot looks to Rocket Raccoon as his father.
