Groot's Dead: "Guardians of the Galaxy" Director Unveils a Truth Bomb

This changes things.
Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy is a seemingly simple character. Adorable? Yes. Lovable? Yes. Complex? That, he is not.
(Spoiler alert, if you haven't seen either film then, why did you even click this? don't proceed.)

Well, during a mostly innocent Twitter conversation over whether people would prefer to save a Groot or a Porg, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn ruined our perfect fantasy.
Gunn who obviously picked Groots over Porgs, or 'penguins' as he refers to them, explained that Baby Groot isn't actually Groot; it's his son.
First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.

This revelation sent shockwaves throughout the galaxy.
Look let's be real, we all knew this but none of us wanted to believe it's true. https://t.co/9Y7kJxMpaG

But a few aren't entirely convinced that this sequence of events makes real sense.
groot repeatedly “died” in the comics and would leave rocket splinters so that rocket could regrow him. baby groot does not have any of old groot’s memories but he is still the same groot. baby groot is not groot’s son but okay...

Regardless, whoever said Hollywood movies aren't tragic?
