Disney's "Aladdin" Defies Mixed Reviews, Still Takes All Your Money

Aladdin's live-action remake hit cinemas over the weekend. To few people's shock, it was a hit.

Everyone has a Disney animation favourite and 1992's Aladdin is arguably near the top of most of those lists. It's near perfect as far as Disney classics go.

So, when Disney announced they were making a live-action remake, fans were equal parts excited and concerned.

Those concerns were heightened after the first few trailers were unveiled, revealing a less-than-impressive Will Smith as Genie.

Thankfully, it seemed like later trailers had fixed some major CGI problems but the critics argued that the movie was still a mix of tedious writing and faux-woke storytelling, missing the mark of the original.

But, despite those reviews, Aladdin's popularity in the box office has persisted and it's raked in an impressive opening weekend in the United States.

It ranked first in earnings in the US, bringing in a cool $US86 million ($AUD124 million) and beating John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum, Avengers: Endgame, Detective Pikachu and Brightburn.

Australia's box office records haven't yet been recorded but you can pretty much assume it blew the competition out of the water too. I mean, it's still a Disney movie after all...

So, while the remake didn't have the critic's consensus, it arguably won over the more important base; the people. Cha-ching.

And, of course, the most relatable tweet of them all.

Catch Aladdin in cinemas around Australia now.
