Rotten Tomatoes Declares "Detective Pikachu" the Best Reviewed Video Game Movie Ever

The Poké-Prince Who Was Promised.

Detective Pikachu has done what Lara Croft, Max Payne and Mario Mario couldn’t: get majority positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

The review aggregation website has declared Detective Pikachu the best reviewed video game adaptation ever. In fact, it’s the first video game adaptation to even be declared "fresh" (which is when a film gets above 60 per cent on the Tomatometer, with a minimum of 20 filed reviews).

Before we mark this day in our calendar as the moment the Video Game Curse was officially broken in Hollywood, it’s important to note that Detective Pikachu only barely made it over the wall, with 64 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. If even a few more negative reviews are added to their system in the coming weeks and months, it could drop below 60 and see the crown torn off Pikachu’s little head.

Nonetheless, the flick is still way ahead of the next best adaptations, which were both released in 2018: Tomb Raider and Rampage, both on 52 per cent.

The length of its reign at the top of the pile really depends on how critics respond to future adaptations. The next to hit cinemas is The Angry Birds Movie 2, which, honestly, probably won’t be a threat. After that is the nightmarish-looking Sonic the Hedgehog and, okay, Detective Pikachu is gonna be just fine.
