Why, Gina?! Chelsea Peretti Is Leaving "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"

Brooklyn Nine-Nine giveth, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine taketh away.

Because the emotional rollercoaster ride of Brooklyn Nine-Nine fandom needed yet another twist, star Chelsea Peretti has announced she’s leaving the recently resurrected show.

On social media, the actor behind Gina Linetti announced she wouldn’t appear in the entire sixth season of the show (its first to air on NBC in America, following its cancellation by Fox). She did so by using Emmy Rossum's goodbye letter from Shameless, which is brilliant and very on-brand for Peretti.

Peretti at least gave fans a glimmer of hope that Gina wouldn’t be gone for good, saying "that doesn’t mean I won’t ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji".

Still, there is a sense of finality to her statement, emphasised by the tweet put out by the show’s co-creator, Dan Goor.

"We have tried really hard to create a storyline for her departure that lives up to a character who can only be described as 'the human embodiment of the 100 emoji'," he wrote.

Peretti briefly stepped away from the show in Season 5 after giving birth to a son. (Fun fact: She is married to Get Out director Jordan Peele.) So, this won’t be the first time the Nine-Nine precinct has gone without Gina. But there’s no other way to respond to this news except by saying it is not coolcoolcool, and definitely not noice.

The fifth season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine landed on Netflix in Australia last week. The upcoming sixth season (Peretti’s last) will debut on SBS and SBS on Demand in Australia early in 2019.
