Watch Prince Play “Purple Rain” For The Last Time (And Find Out Where To Get His Music Online)

The world is reckoning with the sudden, unexpected passing of Prince in many ways.

They’re buying up his music on iTunes, snapchatting their grief and sharing Dave Chappelle GIFs. (“Game, blouses.”) There’s pretty much no wrong way to do it.

Dearly beloved, if you’re struggling today with Prince’s death at age 57, hopefully you can find some solace below.

NB: We'll continue to update this with details on how to honour Prince around the country.

The Last Time Prince Played “Purple Rain”.

On Thursday, Prince took the stage in Atlanta for what would be his final ever live performance. Even though phones weren't allowed in the venue, one concertgoer still captured footage of his solo rendition of “Purple Rain”. In this one instance, we'll let it slide.

If you didn’t get to see Prince during his Piano & a Microphone tour earlier this year, the following short clip will have to do. Try not to cry.

Where To Find His Music Online.

If you’re wondering why you can’t find much of Prince’s music online, it’s because he was fiercely protective of his tunes and infamously suspicious of the Internet. (Except for Instagram. He loved that thing.)

Vulture, however, has a handy catalogue of where you can stream his tunes. In short, you basically need a Tidal subscription if you want to hear anything of his today.

But, if you want to download some music for keeps, you can turn to iTunes, like so many others already have.

Condition of the Chart.

Unsurprisingly, Prince’s music has rocketed back to the top of the charts following news of his death. In the U.S., “Purple Rain”, “Little Red Corvette” and “When Doves Cry” take up the top three spots on the iTunes singles chart, while The Very Best of Prince, the soundtrack to Purple Rain, The Hits/The B-Sides and 1999 take the top four places on iTunes’ albums chart.

In Australia, the highest charting Prince song on iTunes is “When Doves Cry”, at #7. However, The Very Best of Prince, The Hits/The B-Sides and Purple Rain take the top three spaces on our iTunes' albums chart. Expect more singles to rise as the day progresses.

The Greatest Ever Super Bowl Show...

Of course, you could always watch his performance at the Super Bowl halftime show from 2007. The guitar solos. They're incredible.

And The Time He Sang With Beyoncé.

Oh yeah, this happened too, at the 2004 Grammy Awards.

It was so good, it inspired this recurring Saturday Night Live sketch with Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph.

Light It Purple.

Victorians will get to pay tribute to Prince this evening at Melbourne’s Arts Centre, where its 126-metre spire will be lit purple

It follows the similar lighting of a bridge in Prince’s Minnesota home. (Even NASA got in the spirit, sharing a picture of a purple nebula, on a day in which purple truly is the saddest colour.)

Snapchat’s “Purple Rain” Filter.

If you’re not in Melbourne, you can instead offer your condolences on social media by adding Snapchat’s new ‘Purple Rain’ filter, which, predictably, adds purple rain to your pics.

Goodbye from POTUS.

No less than the President of the United States is mourning the Purple One today, sharing the following statement on Facebook.

Justin Timberlake and Madonna also offered their tributes via Instagram.

He Changed The World!! A True Visionary. What a loss. I'm Devastated.🦄 This is Not A Love Song.

It was Raspberry Beret. I was 4 years old. Yes, 4. I remember that I instantly loved it. "Mommy, who is that singing?" Seems weird but it's true. More than a "once in a lifetime" artist... Just a ONCE IN FOREVER ARTIST. I'm still in shock as I write this and I feel this overwhelming grief. But, we should all turn away from that and HONOR this musician that changed all of our lives, our perspectives, our feeling, our whole being. From another planet? Probably. Royalty, for sure. Us worthy..? Laughable. They say don't meet your idols... That they let you down. But, some of my greatest, funniest (yes, he was hilarious), and most prolific encounters and conversations about music came from the moments that I spent with him. It would be silly to say that he has inspired our music... It's beyond that. He's somewhere within every song I've ever written. I am sad, but I will smile when I think of every second that I had the fortune of being in his company. We have lost our greatest living musician. But his music will never die. Prince, NOTHING COMPARES... #RIPPrince
