The Creators of “Rick and Morty” Are Not Happy About This Whole Szechuan Sauce Thing

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, what have you wrought?

Yesterday, police were sent to disperse rabid Rick and Morty fans who had begun protesting outside McDonald’s locations across America… because stores had run out of limited edition Szechuan sauce.

(If you are new to this story, welcome. It is weird here.)

It was just the latest inexplicable move by a fandom that has grown obsessed with obtaining the throwaway limited-edition sauce flavour Rick named as his one true motivation in life (which was actually being used to make a point about his total inability to feel an emotional connection to his family, but whatever).

Justin Roiland, one of the show’s creators and the voice of both Rick and Morty, took to Twitter to call for calm (while also noting the McDonald’s promotion was completely unauthorised).

In a later post promoting some Rick and Morty toys, he asked fans to “just be cool”.

Over the weekend, he came to the defence of Rick and Morty’s “good” fans. Though, the fact that he felt the need to Tweet about the “bad” was an implicit acknowledgment that some had gone too far.

Last month, co-creator Dan Harmon hit back at some of the toxic male fans who have been targeting the show’s female writers.

“I’ve made no bones about the fact that I loathe these people,” he told EW.

“These knobs, that want to protect the content they think they own—and somehow combine that with their need to be proud of something they have, which is often only their race or gender.”

On Twitter today, he referenced the recent sauce-drama.

Anyway, Rick and Morty remains a fantastic television show. Still, everyone just needs to cool it.
