Netflix Just Cancelled Marvel’s "Jessica Jones" and "The Punisher" Too

The end is nigh.
Though Marvel heroes Jessica Jones and The Punisher weren’t dusted into oblivion by Thanos, they are the latest casualties in an even more devastating infinity war: the cancellation battle between Netflix and Disney.
Deadline confirmed that the upcoming third season of Jessica Jones will be its last, while the recently-released second season of The Punisher also brings the Frank Castle story to an end.
Jessica Jones and The Punisher join the previously slaughtered Netflix-Marvel shows Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, not to mention the team-up series The Defenders, which we guess was a one-and-done sort-of deal. It’s widely believed Netflix started canning their Marvel TV collaborations when Disney (who owns Marvel) started withdrawing their movies from the streaming platform, in anticipation of the launch of their own service: Disney+.
Netflix followed up Deadline's report with a statement, reiterating, "Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix."
"Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come," they added, indicating that all those aforementioned Netflix-produced Marvel shows won’t abandon the platform for Disney+ in the immediate future.
But, Netflix also sounds like they're pretty definitively done with any future Marvel collabos, saying, "We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning." The team-up is over.
The stars of each show mourned the cancellations on Instagram.
A semi-salty statement from Marvel TV definitely suggests these cancellations were all Netflix’s idea, hinting that there might still be a future for these cancelled superheroes elsewhere (just don't expect the same actors or showrunners to come with)…
"Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that," Marvel's statement read in part.
Anyhoo, Jessica Jones S3 will land on Netflix later this year, while Disney+ is set to launch with original Star Wars and Marvel shows (including one based on Loki and another on Scarlet Witch) sometime in 2019.
In the meantime, most Disney movies are on Aussie streaming service Stan. I know, it's getting pretty hard to keep up.
