"Luke Cage" Might Be Invincible, But It Didn't Save Him From a Netflix Cancellation

Farewell, Luke Cage.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: no one is safe from Netflix's proverbial cutting room floor. This time, it's another Marvel-Netflix production, Luke Cage, that has been dropped and it has fans worried about the future of the Marvel television world.

Unlike the other recent superhero cancellation of Iron Fist, which received dismal reviews and hundreds of critical think pieces on its alleged white-washing, Luke Cage's cancellation caught us by surprise.

Marvel and Netflix released a statement thanking fans for their support but not really providing any reason for the cancellation. What a cruel time to be alive.

"Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season," Marvel and Netflix said in the statement.

"Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem's Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series."

Season 2 of Luke Cage ended on an uplifting note (spoiler alert) with Cage seizing control of the central nightclub, Harlem's Paradise, and taking on a new role as Harlem's sheriff.

With the cancellation of both Luke Cage and Iron Fist, the future of Marvel and Netflix's cross-over series, The Defenders, also looks in doubt.

It's a strange set of events, as Disney announced they'd be launching their own streaming service, which would see all Marvel (and Disney) titles move from Netflix. Pre-existing Marvel shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Defenders would remain on Netflix; that is, if they still exist by the time Disney launches their own streaming baby.

Student Edge has reached out to Netflix for comment regarding the future of The Defenders series.
