Happy International Women’s Day! Here Are Some Cool Aussies to Cheer On

Yaas queen 👑

It’s International Women’s Day and today is all about celebrating the women who make the world so great. From being great representatives, to kicking butt in their respective fields, here are some of the cool Aussies doing amazing things.

Emma McKeon.

The most recent winner of the Young Australian of the Year accolade, Emma McKeon has won 14 gold medals at three Commonwealth Games and five gold medals at the Olympics. All before she was 29-years-old.

When she won the award earlier in the year she wanted to encourage the younger generation of swimmers to follow their dreams.

“I’ve been swimming for as long as I can remember and I grew up being inspired by incredible athletes,” she said.

“So going from that young girl to today, it is still crazy to me that I’ve done what I have in sport.

“And I want young kids to know that I was once in the same position that they are now, hoping and dreaming of one day doing something big.”

Angourie Rice.

From student films, to Spider-Man: No Way Home, to now starring as the new Kady Heron in the Mean Girls musical movie, Angourie Rice has taken Hollywood by storm.

In 2021, she was honoured on Variety’s “Actors to Watch” list and since then has only continued to grow as an actress.

Bianca James.

We might be biased but we think Bianca James is the coolest person on this list. And it’s not because she’s Student Edge’s Digital Producer or anything 👀

Alongside being our Digital Producer, Bianca is also a passionate gaming content creator who has been interviewing professionals within the gaming industry at conventions such as PAX Australia. As part of International Women’s Day, Bianca took part in TikTok Australia and New Zealand’s Women in Gaming campaign.

“I got to co-host my stream with another creator, which was a fantastic opportunity to connect our online communities, share our passion for games and support one another!”

The Tillies.

The Matildas had a whopping year in 2023, making it all the way to semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup, Australia’s best World Cup finish.

And they’ve now officially qualified for the Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament after beating Uzbekistan 10-0.

Georgie Stone.

An Aussie actress, writer and transgender rights advocate, Georgie Stone made history by becoming the first transgender character on Neighbours. She got the role after pitching it to the show’s producers a year earlier.

Speaking to Pink News, Mackenzie said she loves playing a trans character with so many positive attributes.

“There are so few instances of positive representation and trans characters who aren’t reduced to their transness being their defining character trait,” she told Pink News.

“I feel really excited that we get to continue telling lots of different stories that don’t reduce or erase her transness but also get to show there’s more to her than just that.”
