Ed Sheeran’s “Game of Thrones” Cameo Was Super Weird, and the Internet Wasn’t Into It

What in the Seven Kingdoms was that?

Game of Thrones returned for its seventh and penultimate season last night, but amid all the table-setting for the show’s endgame (and inevitable face-off between Cersei and Daenerys), showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss still found time to give singer Ed Sheeran a gratuitous cameo.

Yes, Ed Sheeran was gifted with several precious minutes from the final episodes of a show that is speeding towards its climax. He even got more lines in the Season 7 premiere ep, “Dragonstone”, than Tyrion Lannister.

(Respect to Peter Dinklage, who reportedly collects approximately $AUD3 million an episode, and this week managed to do so by silently walking alongside Khaleesi as she surveyed her family’s once-conquered castle. Get that money, PD!)

For those who missed Sheeran’s star moment (extremely mild spoilers ahead), he was discovered singing in the woods by roaming murderess Arya Stark (Maisie Williams). When she says she doesn’t recognise the song, he turns to the camera and tells her/us: “It’s a new one.”

However, instead of immediately delivering a ‘needle’ to his throat for basically winking at the audience, Arya accepts Sheeran’s fellow soldiers’ invitation to join them for some food and wine.

Twitter had feelings.

It's probably a good thing Ed Sheeran got off Twitter.
