HBO, Starbucks Respond to That Rogue Coffee Cup in "Game of Thrones"

If you haven’t watched the latest Game of Thrones—or are lactose intolerant—click away.

Production on each of the final Game of Thrones episodes is so intricate, so expensive, you may not even fully be able to appreciate its miniscule details until your fifth or sixth rewatch.

For instance, have you even absorbed all of the Easter eggs in its brand new opening credits yet?

Or, in the fourth and most recent episode of Season 8, "The Last of the Starks", were you among the raven-eyed viewers who spotted Podrick Payne picking up some Winterfell lasses behind Sansa?

It’s no wonder each episode is estimated to cost about $US15 million each.

Which makes it all the more puzzling that someone could casually leave a Starbucks cup in front of Daenerys Targaryen, in a key mid-shot, and none of the creators noticed it in time to CGI it out.

Well, the audience certainly noticed it.

And now the cup even has its own Twitter account.

It’s not even the first time a GOT character has been caught carrying a latte on screen.

Producer Bernie Caulfield has apologised for the blunder on WNYC radio, joking that, "Westeros was the first place to actually, you know, have Starbucks."

HBO, meanwhile, offered the following statement: "The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered a herbal tea."

Hate to be the barista who failed to bend the knee.

Update (08/06): So long, sweet knight coffee cup. HBO has CGI-d the stray Starbucks container out of the scene in question, Gizmodo reports. You now only have the above GIF to remember it by. We will sing its legend for eons.
