Pixar’s “Lightyear” Trailer Dropped and the Nostalgia Is Real

Excitement levels are reaching infinity and beyond.

Hold onto your rockets—we’re in a whole new Toy Story metaverse where Buzz Lightyear is an actual space ranger venturing into the endless galaxy. 

The teaser trailer dropped overnight and it’s serving Star Wars, The Martian and Interstellar epic-ness. Brace yourself for some serious goosebumps when David Bowie’s “Starman” kicks in. 

You saw correctly—that’s a remarkably more youthful Buzz, donning a full head of hair. 

And no, he didn’t get implants. Lightyear goes back in time to Buzz’s origin story, marking the first spinoff for the silver screen that the studio has produced (franchises have traditionally been adapted into TV shows or shorts).

The official plot synopsis released by Disney-Pixar describes the film as a “sci-fi action-adventure” which “[introduces] the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans”. It appears that there’s a whole lot of robots, aliens and interplanetary exploration involved. 

The hype across social media is real, with Chris Evans himself, who voices Buzz, having his own fangirl moment.

Who can blame him! He’s replacing Tim Allen for the titular role, and while those are some big space-boots to fill, is there anything Chris Evans can’t do? 

Aside from the Captain America star, Disney-Pixar seems to be tight-lipped on the remainder of the cast—but we’re certain there’ll be some jaw-dropping names on the line-up. 

The movie will blast off in Australian cinemas on 16 June 2022. While it is reportedly expected to be an exclusive theatrical release, Disney could possibly experiment with their 45-day release window on Disney+ and touch down on the streaming service around August 2022.  

If the studio is expecting to reach a super young child audience they’ll be proven gravely wrong when us OG Toy Story die-hards rock up to the cinemas next year. No judgement!
