No, it isn’t being pulled from the theatrical schedule because it was critically ravaged and flopped in the United States. This isn’t an Unfriended: Dark Web situation, people.
The actually-very-well-reviewed feature is actually going direct to digital here on 3 April—which would have been its theatrical release date—before landing on Disney+ on 24 April because cinemas in Australia and New Zealand have been closed due to the coronavirus pandemic (much as they have in other nations).
In fact, Onward’s cinematic run in the States was brought to an early end for the same reason, so its $US61 million tally in the US makes it Pixar’s lowest grossing release ever by default. It also now becomes Pixar’s first film to skip cinemas in Australia and New Zealand. But, again, the COVID-19 of it all needs to be considered.

We wondered if Onward (which features Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as two elf brothers on an epic quest to reunite with their dead dad for a day) would be held until the Term 3 holidays in Australia rather than go direct to digital (as it had in America). But with no real clarity as to when cinemas will reopen, Disney has ultimately decided to give audiences the chance to get their fix of Onward now.
"While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes," said director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae in a statement.
So, how do I watch Onward?
From 3 April, you’ll be able to buy the movie digitally everywhere you buy digital movies (think iTunes, Google Play, PlayStation Store, and so on).
If you’re patient, you can stream Onward from Disney+, beginning 6pm AEST on 24 April (all you’ll need is a Disney+ subscription to enjoy). (Affiliate disclosure: Student Edge may earn a commission if you click that link and buy a product from our partner’s page.)
