Chris Evans Keeps Joking About Captain America’s Death In "Avengers: Endgame"

Why do you toy with us, Chris? You’re one of the top three Chrisses!

Ahead of Avengers: Endgame, The Hollywood Reporter has asked Chris Evans about his—and by extension, Captain America’s—rumoured exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Concerningly, the profile points out that Evans "has said he’s done playing the character after this," though it’s not clear if that’s referring to his many, many previous claims of wanting to hang up Cap’s shield, or if this was newly shared in their latest interview.

(I mean, it’s not like his Disney’s overlords would let Evans confirm anything regarding Steve Rogers’ fate before the release of Endgame, but still, that particular excerpt from the cover story is especially unhelpful.)

Regardless, Chris felt compelled to joke about Captain America’s death, which will always be #toosoon, even if it never actually happens.

He first brings it up when asked if he’s actually seen the full three-hour-plus epic yet. Evans answers: "It's a real good one. I saw, like, the first hour of it." When the journo jokingly asks if he watched it up to the point where Cap dies, Evans responds by saying, "Right, exactly."

"After I die by Tony [Stark]'s hand, I just said, You know what? I can't watch this."

(THR reiterate at this point that Evans is joking, but you know what, Avengers have accidentally spoiled their films via bad jokes before, so…)

As if that wasn’t enough, Evans elaborated that the length of the movie was due to the fact his "funeral’s like an hour", and that he "choked up like three times" while watching because "it’s hard… seeing my own death."

You will not be surprised to learn that Twitter did not handle his good-natured goofs well.

Avengers: Endgame hits Aussie cinemas on 25 April and will reportedly run for 182 minutes, so start your bladder-training now.
