We Ranked the Five Most Aussie Snacks: Here’s Our Verdict

Hint: Arnott’s is a big contributor.
If you’ve lived in Australia for any period of your life, you’ll probably know that Aussie snacks are pretty much the greatest hunger busters in the world (debatable but we’re convinced).
We’ve all seen countless YouTube videos of people all over the world testing out Aussie snacks (and butchering our beloved Vegemite) but we’re not here to test, we’re here to pit our fave snacks against each other.
So, in case you’ve never tried any Aussie snacks before—or you just want to read a controversial take—here’s what we think are the top five most Aussie snacks.
5. Cheezels.
Starting out strong, we’ve got a fam fave in the chippy department.
Owned by SnackBrands, Cheezels are Australia’s one and only cheesy, ring-shaped chip designed to fit perfectly on your finger (and in yo’ belly).
Not only are these bad bois proudly Australian-made but they’re a delicious hunger buster, easy to eat, and they make a fun little joke.
I know mum says not to play with your food but to not put Cheezels on my fingers would be a crime.
4. Fairy bread.
Next on our list are a must at any birthday party or work event: Fairy bread.
This simple, easy and delicious snack consists of classic white bread, butter and sprinkles (who knew sugar and bread would taste so good?).
Invented in 1929, Fairy bread is a classic because it’s something we all grew up with. It's cheap, easy and super fun to both make and eat.
The best thing about Fairy bread is that it’s not exclusive to Australia, so if you live elsewhere in the world, why not give it a go?

3. TimTams.
Staying on the sweet train, next up are TimTams.
Alright, I’m gonna say it now: Arnott’s TimTams beat all other bickies no cap, Jammy Dodgers don’t stand a chance (soz UK).
In case you’ve been living under a rock, TimTams are Australia’s ultimate chocolate biscuit, consisting of malted bickies, separated by a light choc cream filing and covered in layered, textured milk chocolate.
Of course, because these are so legendary, they come in endless flavours, but the OG has got to be the best.

2. Shapes.
Now we've reached God tier level snacks, and it simply wouldn’t be right unless we gave a high-ranking spot to Shapes.
Also owned by Arnott’s, Shapes are Australia’s favourite savoury biscuits. They’re not quite chips, but they don’t need to pretend to be ‘cos they’re so good.
Controversial opinion but BBQ Shapes are the best. I will die on this hill.
First produced in Victoria in 1954, Shapes are a cult favourite in pantries all around the country.
In fact, Aussies love their Shapes so much that in 2016, when Arnott’s altered the recipes for each of their core flavours and baked the seasoning into the biscuit rather than just on the outside, we wouldn’t have it.
Australian consumers were so mad that Arnott’s had to revert back to the original flavours and scrap the updated ones.

1. Vegemite.
Last but certainly not least is the Australian icon: Vegemite.
This one takes out the top spot for a few reasons: it’s the most Aussie, it’s the oldest on this list and it’s the most versatile.
Eat it as a snack on toast, add it to your sammies or burgers, mix it into sauces, cheesy pastries or eat over popcorn. Its options are endless.
This salty yeast spread was invented in Melbourne back in 1922 and remains an Aussie breakfast and lunch staple.
Made from concentrated yeast extract, it sounds kinda nasty. However, when used correctly it can be the perfect addition to any savoury dish. (This is a PSA to never eat it straight from the spoon, you have been warned.)
