Selena Gomez Commits Vegemite Cruelty on Her Quarantine Cooking Show

Noooo, don’t eat it with a spoon!
Selena Gomez has shared a teaser clip for the next episode of her casual HBO Max cooking series Selena + Chef, which shows her and a friend taste-testing a bunch of famous Aussie snacks.
Ah, that’s never been done before.
The video posted to Twitter is a collaboration piece with Australian celebrity chef Curtis Stone. According to Selena, Curtis sent her the iconic treats in anticipation of their cooking shoot.
If this is the first time you’re hearing of Selena + Chef, it is a super chilled television cooking show that has been hosted by Selena Gomez since August 2020.
Basically, the unscripted series started during quarantine as a way for Selena to help herself and her fans get through the time stuck indoors.
Each episode features a celebrity or professional chef, a guest star, and a new fun cuisine. In this upcoming episode, it's obviously Australia’s turn.
From the start of the teaser, things seem to go really well. Selena and her mate Raquelle taste some Mint Slice, Tim Tams and even ANZAC biscuits with raving reviews, and contemplate which warm beverages they might pair with these tasty snacks (there is a correct answer: tea).
Just as things are looking good, the two move on to try the thing that every American dreads: Vegemite.
From there, everything goes downhill.
First of all, they open the jar and immediately give it a big sniff. Rookie move guys, you don’t wanna do that.
Then, after basically gagging from the smell alone, the pair emotionally prepare to taste it (while Aussies desperately look around the frame for any sight of toast).
As you can probably guess, Australians around the world were left heartbroken when Selena pulled out a giant spoon and dipped it straight into the jar of the salty breakfast spread.
I’m not sure if we can take another American eating Vegemite the wrong way.
"And what, they like use this for their like sandwiches or something?" Selena said before putting the spoon in her mouth.
Ah, so close!
If you’re new to Vegemite, it is a savoury breakfast staple. It belongs on bread or toast, either with butter or cheese. Most importantly, it's supposed to be spread in a very thin layer.
I can’t stress enough how thin the layer is supposed to be.
While it’s probably not Selena’s fault, surely Curtis gave her a heads up?
Considering how many times we’ve seen this done before (yes, we’re looking at you Tom Hanks), you'd think someone would let poor Selena in on the correct way to eat it.
Unfortunately, the two are left literally gagging and rinsing their mouths out in disgust. In fact, they ranked it as their least favourite Aussie snack, leaving Australians everywhere crying.
Some fans on Twitter have given Selena a pass because they started with sweet foods and then went to savoury, which must have been a shock to the system.
Also they ate it after they'd had a huge number of sweet things, it must have been a big shock to their palette. Funny though. I mean designed for maximum lols.

Definitely funny! But yes, doesn't everyone do savory then sweet? 😂😂😂

Others, however, are sure that the problem was just the delivery of the spread, assuring her that it just needed some toast and butter.
Why didn't Curtis tell you how to use the vegemite!? That's so wrong! Nobody eats vegemite from the jar like that! 😱

Fingers crossed she gets all the info and gives it another go.
