The George Floyd Protests Are Being Soundtracked to "This Is America" on TikTok

It’s become a viral anthem.

Thousands of protesters continue to march in the United States over the death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer. For seven consecutive days people have taken to the streets, with at least 40 US cities imposing curfews in response to the protests.

Despite being peaceful at first, the protests have escalated. Now, demonstrators have clashed with police, which has led to riots and looting. Officers have used rubber bullets, flash bangs and tear gas to clear protesters from the area.

Over the weekend, protesters also gathered in London, Berlin, Auckland and Australia to draw attention to the Black Lives Matter movement.

While news crews are there to capture footage of the protests, demonstrators have also been sharing their own videos on TikTok.

Many of the videos have been soundtracked to Childish Gambino's "This Is America", along with a mashup of the song with Post Malone's "Congratulations".

A music producer called Carneyval created the powerful mashup, which has now been used in more than 143,000 TikTok videos. 

TikTok users have been using "This Is America" to address racism, gun violence, police brutality against black people and homophobia. 

The song references the fact that black Americans are disproportionately targeted by law enforcement, and the music video has been viewed more than 670 million times.

It's difficult to watch some of the footage, considering how much the situation has deteriorated. However, the videos provide significant insight into what's going on in the US.

Earlier today, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner in Minneapolis ruled the death of George Floyd a homicide. An independent autopsy also found that the unarmed black man was suffocated. 

The US Army and National Guard have been called in to "dominate the streets" by President Donald Trump, and around 5,600 people have been arrested since the protests began.
