Prince Still Dominates The ARIA Charts In Death (And Post-“Lemonade”)

In the week following his sudden death, Prince managed to get eight singles in the ARIA Top 50. Not bad.
This, despite the omnipresence of Beyoncé’s new album Lemonade and its many, many potential chart-topping singles. (She nonetheless claimed the top spot on the album charts, besting… The Very Best of Prince). “Purple Rain” was Prince’s highest charting single for the week, re-entering the chart at #3 (its highest spot in Australia to date). “When Doves Cry” – a former #1 – landed at #11, with “Little Red Corvette”, “Kiss”, “1999” and “Cream” taking #22, #27, #28 and #30 respectively. (The latter three had all been Top 10 hits in the past.) Still impressive, “Raspberry Beret” just missed out on the Top 30, finding itself at #31 for the week. “Diamonds and Pearls” snuck into the chart at #50. Besides The Very Best Of Prince, the Purple One also has eight further records in ARIA's Top 50 Albums chart. In America, the stats are even more impressive. There, more than four million of his albums and songs have been sold since his April 21 passing. It’s hard to find the silver-lining in the death of a legend, but maybe Prince was introduced to a heap of new young fans this week. It seems like the right time to share this recurring SNL sketch in which Prince and Bey co-host a talk show. And, one more time, "Purple Rain".
