Oscar Pistorius' Early Prison Release Blocked By South African Government

Remember when it was revealed Oscar Pistorius would leave prison after serving just 10 months for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp?

Never mind.

According to The Guardian, the South African government has intervened, just days before Pistorius was to be moved from prison to his home where he would remain under house arrest. They have referred the matter back to the parole review board.

Justice Department spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said the date of his release would need to be reviewed again, because the approval for house arrest came too soon.

Originally sentenced to five years, Pistorius was granted parole in June, eight months into his imprisonment. He needed to have served ten months before being considered by the parole board.

A petition from the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa brought the timing dispute to justice minister Michael Masutha’s attention.
