Oscar Pistorius Sentenced To Six Years For Murder; Could Be Out In Three

Oscar Pistorius’ courtroom gambit to walk without prosthetics seems to have paid off.
The disgraced Paralympian and convicted murderer has been sentenced to just six years in prison by High Court Judge Thokozile Masipa.
According to ABC News, he could be released from Pretoria’s Kgosi Mampuru prison in three years, which is when he is eligible for parole.
Last year, Pistorius was freed from prison having served one year of his five-year sentence for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
But in December, the South African Supreme Court upgraded his conviction to murder; a crime that carries a minimum sentence of 15 years.
And yet, Judge Masipa argued that Pistorius should only serve six, saying, “I’m of the view that a long term of imprisonment will not serve justice.”
"He's a first offender. Considering the facts of this matter, he's not likely to re-offend.
"The life of the accused shall also never be the same. He is a fallen hero and can never be at peace.”
Women’s rights activists have decried Judge Masipa’s ruling, with a spokeswoman for the African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) saying, “It is an insult to women in this country.”
There lies an opportunity for the state to file an appeal, though it’s unknown if they’ll proceed.
In a statement to press after the ruling, Reeva Steenkamp’s father Barry only offered the following: “I hope not to be here again.”
The family’s lawyer only offered this additional comment: “The law has run its course. There is nothing we can do now.”
