Oscar Pistorius To Be Released On Parole In August

A parole board will recommend Oscar Pistorius be released from prison, ten months after he was found guilty of culpable homicide.

The South African Olympian had initially been sentenced to five years in prison for the shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

According to ABC News, the double amputee sprinter once affectionately referred to as the Blade Runner will see freedom much sooner.

A Pistorius family member originally leaked the news, which was later confirmed by correctional services.

Pistorious will be recommended for “correctional supervision” on August 21.

“Normally, this will mean house arrest with one hour of free time each day,” said commissioner of the correctional services, Zach Modise.

“As he progresses, we will relax these conditions.”

However, an appeal by prosecutors to increase the severity of his conviction is expected to go before the Supreme Court in November.

If an appeals court finds Pistorious guilty of murder, he could face a minimum of 15 years in jail.

Reeva Steenkamp’s parents, June and Barry, released a statement expressing their disappointment with Pistorious’ early release.

“Incarceration of 10 months for taking a life is simply not enough… We fear that this will not send out the proper message and serve as the deterrent it should,” it read.
