A Bank Robber Allegedly Tried Proposing to Taylor Swift by Throwing Money Over Her Fence

"It’s a love story, baby just say yes."

A 26-year-old Connecticut man has been arrested by police after he robbed a bank and threw the loot over Taylor Swift’s fence in an ill-fated marriage proposal.

Okay, there’s a lot to digest here, so let’s take it bit by bit.

According to the Hartford Courant, Bruce Rowley robbed a bank of $US1,600 in the city of Ansonia last week, and then drove to Swift’s $US17 million mansion in Rhode Island (about 160km away).

Ansonia Police spokesman Lt. Patrick Lynch said that Rowley claims to have thrown some of the money over the fence, but left when Swift didn’t emerge. He was picked up by officers when they spotted his car driving back into Connecticut, after a pursuit.

Rowley then began telling police his intentions in the police cruiser.

"It seemed he wanted to propose to her," Lt. Lynch concluded.

Swift, who police say knows nothing about Rowley, has certainly been the subject of some unusual courtships in her time, but this one’s pretty gross and, we must stress, not to be emulated.

Last year, Swift was featured on the cover of TIME Magazine as one of the "Silence Breakers" who helped inspire a righteous wave of action against sexual abusers, having successfully countersued a DJ she claims assaulted her during a meet-and-greet.

Needless to say, this trend of random, criminal dudes feeling entitled to creep on an unconsenting Swift—or anyone—needs to stop, no matter how many bags of cash they tote.

But in a strange addendum to the story, police say they haven’t found any of the money Rowley says he threw over the fence.
