#NuggsforCarter Is a Success, But Then United Airlines Tried to Join In and Got Deservedly Roasted

US teen, and now expert Tweeter, Carter Wilkerson has just scored his dream of receiving a year’s supply of Wendy’s chicken nuggets.

Last month, Wilkerson fatefully tweeted at Wendy’s to see how many retweets he needed before they’d offer him the nuggets. They responded saying that 18 million will be sufficient; a modest goal.

Since then, he’s been on a campaign to attain the unprecedented amount of retweets. For reference, the record for the highest amount of retweets on Twitter had belonged to Ellen DeGeneres’ iconic Oscars selfie.

But now, a month later, (SPOILER ALERT) he’s finally surpassed that record.

Wendy’s rewarded him by giving him the nugget supply anyway, even though it wasn't 18 million.

But then, something embarrassing happened. United Airlines tried to join in on the PR equivalent of a slam dunk; something United has not achieved in quite some time (See: Flight 3411 scandal, Simon the bunny scandal.)

And the world collectively LOL’d.

The lesson here, folks, is that if your company has done some bad stuff and nobody likes you atm, work on fixing that image through genuine engagement instead of awkwardly jumping on bandwagons that clearly surpass your hip factor.

It will never end well.
