New "Fast and Furious 9" Trailer Teases Trip to Outer Space

They finally did it (maybe).

Just when we thought that the Fast and Furious franchise couldn’t get any more ridiculous, the latest trailer revealed that the series might tackle the final frontier: outer space.

Yep, you read that right.

That ongoing joke about the only place left for the series to go being space has potentially become a reality. At least, it seems so in the trailer that dropped yesterday for Fast and Furious 9.

From explosions, magnets and a mumbling Vin Diesel, let’s break down the wild, weird and wonderful from the new trailer.

So, are they going to space in F9?

At the end of the trailer, Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej Parker (Ludacris)—both wearing makeshift astronaut suits—are shown inside a heavily modified Pontiac Fiero that just happens to be strapped to a plane.

The two psych themselves up as the car detaches from the plane and starts to freefall. Amidst some quality banter, they punch a button labelled ‘BLAST OFF’ and the rockets attached to the sides of their Fiero come alive.

As absurd as it is, this actually looks pretty cool. That aside, it feels like the writers have included space travel as a humorous subplot in response to the Twitter jokes, rather than it actually being a significant part of the film.

Although, the start of the trailer does include a scene with Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) watching his wife Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez) play with a space shuttle with their son Marco. Foreboding much?

Charlize Theron has a bowl cut.

Supervillain hacker, Cipher (Charlize Theron) returns to the film to wreak havoc over Dom and his crew. But it’s not her unquestionably brilliant acting skills that people are talking about.

It’s her bowl cut.

Her hair is giving off strong primary school vibes, but weirdly, we reckon she rocks it. Hey, if there is anyone that can pull off an audacious hair doo like this, it’s Theron.

What is happening with Paul Walker's Character?

It looks like F9 will finally address actor Paul Walker’s death in the series.

After brushing aside Brian O’Conner’s absence in The Fate of the Furious, the latest trailer shows Dom watching a video on his iPad of Brian playing with his son.

The music in the background is The Chainsmokers’ “Family”, and Dom is voicing over the scene saying, “There are moments that separate us.”

We don’t know about you, but we reckon that they are officially going to write Brian O’Conner out of the series in F9.

Fast and Furious 9 will hit Australian cinemas on 17 June after being postponed due to COVID.
