Idris Elba Will Play Knuckles in “Sonic 2” and We Are So On-Board

Could Idris Elba get any cooler?

Fresh off the release of The Suicide Squad, British actor (and everyone’s dream husband) Idris Elba is taking on a more unusual role for his next film.

Earlier this morning, Elba tweeted he will be voicing Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, due to hit cinemas in 2022.

At first there was confusion from fans if the tease from the Luther star was legit or not, but reshares from the official movie account and actor Ben Schwartz (the voice of Sonic) have confirmed that Idris Elba will play Knuckles in the sequel.

If you’re wondering who Knuckles is btw, he’s an echidna in the Sonic games universe that initially got in the way of Sonic’s work before realising that they both wanted the same thing and should work together.

In the games though, Knuckles had an American accent, so it’ll be interesting to see if Elba changes his voice for the role or just full on embraces his London Hackney accent.

To be fair, Elba can do a very convincing American accent as seen in The Office and The Wire so anything is possible at this stage.

is idris elba gonna do a different voice or is it literally just gonna be his normal voice coming out of a 16-year-old cartoon echidna. either way this is going to be the movie of all time

We're not the only ones who have been pleasantly surprised by Elba's announcement, with fans of the actor jumping on Twitter to express their delighted shock that Elba is joinging the series. Here's our favourite picks:

The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film is slated for an 8 April, 2022 release and Elba’s tweet aside, there’s a number of rumours circling the film including that Tails the fox will join Sonic, as well as Jim Carrey will return to reprise his role as Robotnik (aka Dr. Eggman) with Knuckles by his side.

I’m calling it now: Knuckles switches sides at the climax of the film and saves Sonic’s life. You read it here first.
