The Grammys Happened: Bruno Mars Sweeps the Top Awards, "Despacito" Gets Snubbed

It wouldn't be a Grammy Awards show without a bit of drama.

The 2018 Grammy Awards (the 60th ceremony, ever) has finished for another year, and what a ride it was.

Prior to the ceremony, it was celebrated for being one of the most diverse music awards ever due to not having a single white male nominee in the top two categories (Album of the Year and Record of the Year), aside from Justin Bieber's feature in "Despacito" remix. 

But there were plenty of upsets, the biggest of which being Bruno Mars sweeping the top three categories of Album of the Year (with 24K Music), Record of the Year (with "24K Magic") and Song of the Year (with "That's What I Like"), and winning a further three prizes for Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album. Okay, we get it.

Obviously, a lot else happens in a three-and-a-half-hour awards show so we'll just give you the highlights (and definitely the lowlights) of the night.

The highlights.

Our Princess Leia, who tragically passed away in 2016, took the Best Spoken Word Album gong posthumously for  voice-acting the audiobook to her memoir, The Princess Diarist. Legends never die.

Kendrick Lamar won five awards and campaigned for Jay-Z to be president.

After taking home the Best Rap/Sung Performance Grammy for his collab with Rihanna, "LOYALTY.", Lamar thanked the rappers he admired (including Jay-Z, who was also nominated in this category). He then finished off by shouting "Jay for President!" potentially throwing another hat in the ring. Could we see Jay-Z vs. Kanye in the 2020 election? Crazier things have happened.

Lil Uzi Vert wore a pretty goth outfit.

Who ever said goth was dead? Because, apparently, Lil Uzi Vert didn't get the memo after rocking up to the Grammys in tripp pants (super goth attire) and a black hoodie. Pretty iconic, I'd say.

The lowlights.

Lorde didn't perform.

So we have a performance from Sting -- doing a 31 year old song. And yet Lorde did not get a solo slot to perform. So many iconic women in music right now, but we get ... this?? I have zero problem with Sting existing, but I really do not understand the priorities of the #grammys

Despite every other Album of the Year nominee given a slot for a performance, Kiwi favourite Lorde was not scheduled to perform. Allegedly, all the male nominees were offered solo performances, but Lorde was only given the opportunity to perform a tribute to Tom Petty. She declined, and is yet to speak out about this row.

Shaggy and Sting performed an old song together.

It's definitely the collab you never wanted to witness but it happened in 2018. Look, some people are saying it wasn't actually as bad as it sounds but I'd just rather it not happen again.

"Despacito" didn't receive any awards.

Boo me all you want, but this song deserved the gong for Record of the Year and/or Song of the Year. We deserved it after being subjected to one million plays and it being permanently etched into our memories. In the end, it received neither of the awards, losing to Bruno Mars. What on earth were they thinking?
