"Future Me Hates Me" Is Your New Anti-Procrastination Study Anthem

How one of the best songs of the year can help you stay on task. (Really.)

You know when cartoon characters get really hungry, and everyone they look at starts resembling chicken drumsticks and hamburgers?

Something similar happens to the music you play while you’re studying: songs about romance, or politics, or Jackie Chan, suddenly sound like they’re speaking specifically to you about your study woes.

Maybe that’s why "Future Me Hates Me", the brand-new tune from New Zealand band The Beths, feels like it speaks to the procrastinator in each of us as exam season approaches.

First of all, it’s important to note that the bouncy rock song is an absolute bop, with an irrepressible chorus and an adorable music video to top it off. So, you should be listening to it on loop for those reasons alone.

But even though the song is pretty explicitly about the risks of throwing yourself into a relationship (and opening yourself up to "future heartbreak"), the title will register a pang of recognition in students too.

After all, as you’re sitting at the desk, poring over your chemistry notes or comparative English tests, and wondering if you should go and watch To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before again, a song like "Future Me Hates Me" pretty accurately captures the annoyance you feel about having wasted another night not studying, in the cold light of morning.

There is almost too much truth in the rest of the chorus: "Future headaches/ wide eyed nights late lying awake/ with future cold shakes/ from stupid mistakes/ future me hates me for."

If you’re making up a study playlist, be sure to add The Beths to it, not only because "Future Me Hates Me" is a tune, but because it’ll hopefully keep you planted in your seat. Do it for future you.
