Facebook Is Renaming Itself to Meta Which Is the Most Meta Move Ever

Welcome to the metaverse.

Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook announced overnight that the company will be changing their name to Meta and will attempt to build a metaverse for its users.

I know, it’s weird, but indulge the poor guy, he’s had a rough run with all his billions of dollars.

Now, we should be clear that Facebook the social media site isn’t changing its name to Meta, but rather the parent company of Facebook.

So, why the random change?

Well, in his quest for global internet dominance, Zuckerberg wants his company to be known more as a metaverse company instead of a social media company.

“I believe that metaverse is the next chapter of the internet,” Zuckerberg said at the conference.

“And it’s the next chapter for our company too. Meta’s focus will be to bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses.”

So, what actually is the metaverse?

You aren’t alone if you don’t fully understand what the metaverse is. It’s a fresh term coined by futurists who are trying to define the future of the internet and computing.

It refers to a digital universe that is a fully immersive experience—kinda like Ready Player One—that allows people to jump in and out of reality at the touch of a button.

Basically, we’re going next level into virtual reality and it’s gonna be wild.

If that didn’t make any sense, just check out Futrama’s vision of the metaverse. That’s basically what it’s gonna be.

How is Facebook—sorry—Meta going to enter the metaverse?

Zuckerberg sees the metaverse as the next step for social networking. The future he is imagining involves VR headsets and augmented reality glasses that combine the digital world and the real world with the help of things like holograms.

“When you play a game with your friends, you’ll feel like you’re right there together in a different world, not just on your computer by yourself,” Zuckerberg revealed.

“And when you’re in a meeting in the metaverse, it will feel like you’re right in the room together making eye contact, have a shared sense of space, and not just looking at a grid of faces on a screen.”

Sounds like Zoom meetings just got way more interesting.

When is the metaverse gonna happen?

Don’t expect Meta and Zuckerberg’s vision of the metaverse to happen anytime soon.

The Facebook founder is predicting that his sci-fi fantasy will take at least a decade to come to fruition. Damn.
