Explaining Marvel and Fortnite’s New Crossover: Nexus War

Here’s the exciting backstory.

So in case you haven’t heard, Marvel has collaborated with Epic Games to combine Marvel heroes and villains with the Fortnite universe, giving gamers the epic new story Nexus War.

Fortnite is well known for its numerous collaborations with franchises like Borderlands, Batman and Star Wars, and their previous crossover with Marvel for Battle Royale but the announcement of this game has caused some serious excitement between fans.

Combining Marvels continuity and famous characters, and Fortnite's colourful landscapes, Nexus War brings players together to protect the multiverse from the villain, Galactus, who aims to devour the powerful energy from Fortnites island of Apollo.

Among the heroes and villains are X-Men’s Wolverine, Mystique and Storm; Guardians of the Galaxy’s Groot and Rocket Racoon; Avengers’ Iron Man, Captain America and She-Hulk; and Fantastic Four’s Doctor Doom.

Brought together by Thor, various Marvel heroes and villains are plucked from earth by Lady Sif who uses the magic of Bifrost to teleport the characters to Apollo Island to help defeat Galactus.

Along with the new characters, players will have access to additional tools and Marvel-themed locations within Fortnite's islands.

This storyline spins off from a recent comic Nexus War: Thor #1 featuring Thor and Galactus as they team up to protect the multiverse from the mysterious universe consuming entity known as Black Winter. You can catch up on the comic for free here.

If comics aren’t your thing but are keen on this collab, here’s a quick run-down on why Thor even ended up on Apollo in the first place and your aim with the Marvel heroes.

Mild spoilers ahead!

With Thor and Galactus teamed up, the two set off to find a series of worlds for Galactus to devour in hopes that, in doing so, it will make him strong enough to fight and defeat Black Winter.

On their journey, the team come across a powerful black hole with unlimited energy known as the Zero Point. Upon finding, Galactus cannot resist the immense power and reaches out to take its energy.

Thor tries to stop Galactus but is accidentally pulled into the Zero Point and flung into a place unknown to him, Apollo Island.

The atmosphere of this new place affects Thor’s mind in a very strange way, causing him to lose his memories and aggressively fight against the islands inhabitants.

Amid the fighting, the islanders notice the power-hungry Galactus rapidly approaching the island to consume its power and Thor makes his moves retrieve his Marvel supporters.

While the mission against Galactus is pretty straight forward, there is no telling how the strange atmosphere of Apollo island will affect the minds of these earthly heroes.
