Christina Grimmie Snubbed By Emmys During ‘In Memoriam’ Segment

Each year, there’s a grim sort of dread that comes with awards ceremonies’ “In Memoriam” segments.

No, it’s not just from seeing the sheer number of greats who we’ve farewelled over the past year (though that’s indeed depressing).

Rather, the dread comes from wondering which artist will be left off the list. In recent years, Joan Rivers, Etta James, Farrah Fawcett and Jackass’ Ryan Dunn have all been snubbed by the Oscars, for instance.

But at yesterday’s Emmys, the dubious honour of “most obvious snub” went to Christina Grimmie, the YouTube star and Voice contestant who was fatally shot in June. (Notably, The Voice won Outstanding Reality Competition Program at the same ceremony.)

Though Prince, David Bowie and Anton Yelchin were all recognised during the “In Memoriam” segment - scored by Tori Kelly’s cover of “Hallelujah” - Grimmie’s face was nowhere to be seen.

Fans on social media did not appreciate the exclusion.

Hopefully Grimmie will get her due when The Voice returns for its eleventh season this week. Expert a tribute of some kind during the premiere episode.
