A “How I Met Your Mother” Spinoff Is Coming and It’s Gonna Be Legen—Wait for It…

…dary! Legendary!

After years of teasing and getting our hopes up, Hulu has announced that a How I Met Your Mother spinoff series is officially on its way.

Not only is a new series confirmed, but Hulu has also shared that our girl, Hilary Duff—star of Younger and Lizzie McGuire—will be playing the main role.

*Squeals.*

The new series is going to have a very similar premise to the original series, and will be titled How I Met Your Father.

It'll follow Sophie (Duff) as she tells her son the lengthy story of how she met his father, along with all the highs and lows of life, just like Bob Saget did as Ted in the OG show.

Beginning the story in 2021 (lol good luck to them), the series will capture Sophie and her close-knit group of friends, but unlike the original series, the mates are in the middle of figuring out who they are in a time of much more internet, dating apps and a lot less privacy.

It’s also not clear if the coronavirus pandemic is going to get a mention or be a part of their struggles, but it would be interesting to see how that could impact the characters' relationships and dating.

So far, Hulu has promised 10 episodes, and is bringing back the original creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, along with the writers and executive producers. Duff is also tipped to be a producer, which we love.

So, why now? Well, this project was initially written back in 2014 for Little Women director Greta Gerwig and Drew Tarver but it didn’t quite make it to production.

Then in 2016 Aptaker and Berger tried a new take on the series in collaboration with You’re the Worst star Alison Bennet, but it didn’t seem to hit the mark either.

Now, thanks to Hulu, we’re finally getting another taste of the show. 

In case you’ve been living under a rock since 2005, How I Met Your Mother was a wildly successful series that aired for nine seasons and spanned over 200 episodes between 2005 and 2014.

Starring legends like Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan, the show followed a group of friends growing up, figuring out love, life and heartache, while the protagonist Ted (Radnor) is on a mission to find his future wife.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,” Duff told Deadline.

“As a huge fan of ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ I’m honoured and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby.

“Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius. Just fangirling over here getting to join the Hulu Originals and 20th families. I realise these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my six and a half’s in there!”

Duff also shared her excitement about the show with fans on her Instagram, referencing some of the show’s most nostalgic one-liners.

Because the original show is so widely beloved and still watched to this day, Hilary and the team have to really make sure they do the spinoff justice.

What fans loved the most about How I Met Your Mother was its ability to be laid back and witty, while at the same time capturing an emotional depth and connection between characters. As long as they don’t go with such a controversial ending again, they should be fine.

While the show itself is confirmed, there is no info on a release date or where you can watch it, but we'll keep Aussie fans updated as soon as we know.
