You Can Get "GTA V" for Free on PC For an Extremely Limited Time

Well, we sure hope you’re reading this article prior to 21 May 2020, because Epic Games is offering PC users the opportunity to download Grand Theft Auto V for free, but only for a limited time only.

If you came to this article after 21 May... we've got nothing for you.

Between now and 11pm on Thursday 21 May, you can get Rockstar’s iconic open world crime-fest for the rock bottom price of zero dollars. The only way it could be cheaper was if it gave you money. (Rockstar can afford it. Grand Theft Auto V has made more money than any other video game or film ever.)

Following the announcement that GTA V would briefly emerge for free from "the Epic Vault", Epic Games was flooded with gamers eager to redeem the offer, causing their online store to crash for a few hours. They’re now back up and running. So, here’s what you’ve gotta do to get yours!

Step 1. Login to epicgames.com on your desktop or phone, or via the Epic Games Launcher.

It goes without saying you’ll need an account with Epic Games first, but setting that up is easy as pie. It’s then up to you if you want to make your purchase on the online store or via the Launcher. We recommend the latter, however, if you’re committed to the browser experience, simply scroll down on the store until you see 'Free Games' and then select GTA V (you will, however, need two-factor authorisation to make it official). It’s a bit easier on the Launcher: when you login, a pop-up will tell you that you can get GTA V for free. Click it, or scroll down on the Home page to see it in your feed.

Step 2. Make sure you’re 18 or older.

If you’ve literally never heard of GTA V before, well, we’re here to inform you that it’s got some pretty hardcore content in there. To get your free digital copy, you’ll need to confirm that you understand it’s recommended only for ages 18+.

Step 3. Select 'Get'.

On the game’s homepage you’ll see its usual price of $AUD47.99 has been crossed out and replaced with 'Free'. That confirms you won’t be charged a cent. Hit the big green button and proceed!

Step 4. Place order.

In your cart you can triple check that you’re not being charged for Grand Theft Auto V. Pay close attention, just in case you’re a minute too late to place your free order and you’re suddenly committing to the full price.

Step 5. Download at your leisure!

Once the purchase is complete, you can download GTA V anytime you see fit. No problem if you’re not planning to do so before 21 May. Provided you own it, you can download it via your Epic Games account whenever you please by accessing your Library.
