YES: A "Heartbreak High" Reboot Is Coming to Netflix in 2022

There’s always room in our brains for more teen drama.

If Netflix recommendations have been any indication, it’s pretty fair to say that we all love a bit of teen drama.

Especially '90s teen drama.

In October, we saw the return of Dawson’s Creek on Aussie Netflix and just last week, the Original Heartbreak High arrived on the streaming service also.

And now, in excellent news, Netflix has announced that a reboot of Heartbreak High is due to reach our screens globally in 2022.

With filming beginning next year, the new eight-episode reboot is expected to attract a similarly diverse fan base to the original series.

Cracking Netflix’s top 30 list of the most-watched programs in Australia and the Netherlands, and the top 10 in Serbia, the ‘90s throwback is a favourite globally (not bad).

If you’re too young to remember Heartbreak High, it was essentially Australia’s answer to Degrassi: a high school drama popular for its honesty and focus on tough topics like sex, drugs, domestic violence, religion, education, homelessness and racism.

Running from 1994 to 1999, the series was a coming-of-age story as a spin-off of the 1993 film The Heartbreak Kid, which explored a high school student-teacher relationship.

Set in inner and east Sydney, the original show tells the story of second-generation migrant teens facing teenage problems and even political and racial tensions that were big issues in the ‘90s.

Netflix’s Director of Originals in Australia Que Minh Luu excitedly announced her plans for the reboot on Twitter.

She wrote, "The news is out! Who among us hasn't dreamed of going to a school like this, a place that's raw, honest, cool, and where EVERY DAY IS MUFTI DAY?

"Our teens today are cooler, wiser, more fluid, socially aware, accepting and galvanised than we were. They're also funnier in a way that is both self-deprecating and brutal and just so... AUSTRALIAN."

The news is out! Who among us hasn't dreamed of going to a school like this, a place that's raw, honest, cool, and where EVERY DAY IS MUFTI DAY?

So excited to work with @FremantleAus and Newbe on reimagining this iconic Australian series for a new generation for @NetflixANZ https://t.co/RnLozM5Efe

The new series will focus on themes about identity, relationships, drugs, partying and more, potentially taking the series to an MA rating.

The show is currently in its scripting stage, with casting to be set soon.

As for now, it’s too early to say if some original and beloved characters will make an appearance but we’ve got our fingers crossed.
