Wrap-Up Fridays: The Three Movies To Catch Over The Holiday Break

Wrap-Up Fridays: The Three Movies To Catch Over The Holiday Break

Or, you could just rewatch Love Actually.

Well, Christmas is nearly here, and that means a gauntlet of fam dinners, celebrations, presents and relaxation.

The post-Christmas period is all about kicking back, relaxing and enjoying your summer, so we’ve put together a list of the top three movies you should be catching this break for the last Wrap-Up Friday of 2022.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

The wait is over – the sequel to Rian Johnson’s 2019 cult hit Knives Out is here.

Releasing on Netflix today, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will see Daniel Craig’s southern detective Benoit Blanc solve a murder mystery in a gorg holiday home in the Greek islands (is it giving White Lotus?).

This time he’s alongside an all-star cast, including but not limited to: Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Ethan Hawke, Hugh Grant, and for some reason Serena Williams.

Advance screenings of Glass Onion have already garnered massive critical praise, with Rotten Tomatoes critics rating it at a whopping 93 per cent, with Wenlei Ma of News.com.au calling it “a second instalment that is just as fun, just as clever and just as brilliant as the first.”

Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical.

This is the one we’ve all been waiting for. From the minds of Roald Dahl and Australia’s own Tim Minchin, the stage musical has been adapted into a feature film for Netflix and we are pumped.

Featuring THE Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull, adorned with some of the best choreography we’ve ever seen, we reckon this is the movie to watch over the break.

TikTok has already gone mad over the scene featuring the song “Revolting Children”, and it looks like the rest of the film will stand up to the hype.

Garnering a critic score of 91 per cent and an audience score of 100 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, people are already loving it.

“Matilda dances exuberantly onto the screen and into your heart,” wrote Peter Marks from the Washington Post.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical is in cinemas now, or you can wait until Boxing Day to catch the musical on Netflix.

The Banshees of Insherin.

If you’re after an artsier film experience, look no further than The Banshees of Insherin.

Martin McDonagh’s reunion with Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farell (Gleeson and Farrell starred in Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges way back in 2004) is already being heralded as one of 2022’s best films.

Nominated for eight Golden Globes and already being floated for the Best Picture at the Oscars, this is one you don’t want to miss.

Set during the Irish Civil War, The Banshees of Insherin follows two lifelong friends who find themselves at odds when Colm (Gleeson) suddenly breaks their friendship apart.

Critics are describing it as “a gut-punch of a comic drama” and “sad, sardonic and insightful”, and have rated it with a 97% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Banshees of Insherin hits Australian cinemas on Boxing Day.

The Classics.

Look we know why you’re here – for the Christmas classics – whether it’s iconic Christmas favourites like Home Alone, Elf, The Santa Clause or Love Actually, we’re here for it.

Whatever movie you’re watching this Christmas and holiday break, enjoy yourselves and remember to relax before 2023 really gets underway.
