Wrap-Up Fridays: Xmas Movie Season Is Here

Plus, some huge trailer drops.

Friday’s here once again, which means it’s time to go through all the latest drops in music, movies, TV and much more.

Of course, December’s landed, which means the next month is going to be a veritable barrage of Christmas movies, TV shows and songs to go through.

Movies.

The first major drop of the Christmas season is here: Violent Night. This action/black comedy features David Harbour (AKA Hopper from Stranger Things) as Santa, shedding the holly jolly exterior as he takes down a group of mercenaries threatening a family on Christmas eve.

It’s a fun premise with a pretty decent cast, including John Leguizamo (Bruno from Encanto) as the film’s villain, Jimmy Scrooge (wow).

Having earned a humble 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics aren’t saying it’s the years best movie, but they don’t hate it.

“Violent Night is probably not going to be a Christmas classic but it will definitely become a cult Christmas Classic,” Allison Rose of FlickDirect wrote, “[it] combines humour, blood, guns, and a Christmas miracle or two and wraps them all up with a neat and shiny bow.”

Audiences are liking it even more, giving it 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and lavishing in Harbour’s performance.

Violent Night is in cinemas now.

Music.

The big release today is of course Lewis Capaldi’s return to the singles charts with “Pointless”. Capaldi’s written the new track alongside none other than Ed Sheeran.

Unlike Capaldi’s other tracks, “Pointless” is a love song.

“It’s a song about being in love, which for me is an almost alien concept. My songs are usually about falling out of love or being heartbroken or something like that. They don’t often lean towards just a happy love,” Lewis told The Big Issue.

He said the track originated in a track co-writers Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid had worked on with Ed Sheeran.

“Johnny and Steve said: ‘We’ve got this verse that Ed did if you want to try and have a crack at writing the chorus.’ They were kind of struggling. I heard it and I was like, it’s great, tweaked it a little bit, put my stamp on it then wrote the chorus and middle-eight and Bob’s your uncle you’ve got a tune,” he said.

“Pointless” is out on streaming, and he's even dropping an acoustic version on his YouTube tonight.

Trailers.

Two massive trailers came out today – big enough to include on Wrap-Up Fridays.

The first is massive tea for any fans of the royals and their drama – the hotly anticipated Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan has released a teaser today.

Harry and Meghan were reportedly paid 88 million pounds ($158 million AUD) by Netflix and it’s already causing drama online. It’s expected the doco will drop on Netflix next week.

This week we also got trailers for some hotly anticipated films: The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

These are both tapped to be huge films and fans are pumped.

That about wraps it up for another Friday – we’ve got a few big flicks coming up for the rest of 2022, so be sure to check in every week for Wrap-Up Fridays.
