Will Disney finally #GiveElsaAGirlfriend in Frozen 2?

The official trailer for Disney's upcoming Frozen 2 has dropped and it's got magic, it's got trolls, it's got tidal waves and it's got princesses kicking butts. Basically, it's everything you could ever want from a Disney animation.

But, some have noted one crucial element is missing: Elsa's female love interest.

Frozen, released way back in 2013, was praised for its great storytelling and inclusion of strong female characters, particularly with it not falling victim to the staid Prince Charming or True Love's Kiss tropes.

It also led to some speculating whether Elsa's character was queer, with "Let It Go" being interpreted as coming out anthem for some.

Of course, Disney never actually confirmed whether this was the case, but back in March last year, it wasn't completely ruled out for the sequel either.

The film's director and scriptwriter, Jennifer Lee, hinted that she loved how so many could relate to Elsa, remaining coy about whether they would give her a female love interest.

"We have tons of conversations about [the development of Elsa], and we're really conscientious about these things," Lee told The Huffington Post.

"I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa's doing in her life, she's telling me every day.

"We'll see where we go."

Later, the teaser trailer released in February seemed to indicate the introduction of a mystery character worthy of the title of Elsa's boo. Some were speculating it was voiced by Evan Rachel Wood, who had since been confirmed to be on board for the sequel.

In the recently-released trailer, however, her presence is completely absent.

That doesn't mean she'll be absent when the film's released, but it could suggest one of two things; she's just a minor character or her role in the sequel is so important, Disney wants to leave the impact of her reveal for a date closer to release.

It certainly didn't stop some fans from maintaining an air of optimism.

We'll just have to wait another six months when Frozen 2 is released on 26 December 2019.
