Everything We Know About Marvel’s First Muslim Superhero

Meet Ms. Marvel (aka Kamala Kahn).

Marvel Comics made a historic (and much needed) first in 2013, introducing Kamala Khan as the first Muslim superhero to headline a Marvel comic.

Now, the 16-year-old Pakistani American teenager will be gracing the small screen in her own Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel, and the epic trailer just dropped on Tuesday.

Who is Ms. Marvel?

She debuted in Marvel Comics in 2013 as Kamala Kahn, a teen from New Jersey who idolises Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel). In the trailer, she looks true to form as a daydreaming, superhero fanatic!

She later develops superhuman abilities and cosmic powers. Her signature powers include launching energy blasts and walking in the air on glowing stepping stones.

And of course, she can’t be a Marvel superhero without a costume. Kamala is adorning a red-and-blue ‘fit, with a stunning lightning zig-zag across the front.

What's the series about?

It’s lowkey giving Spiderman: Homecoming vibes, with a coming-of-age type tale as Kamala struggles to find her place at school and in the world. There looks to be lots of hilarious teenage experiences we'll be getting relatable second-hand embarrassment from.

In Kamala’s world, the Avengers are real, and she’s a lil obsessed, but aren’t we all? She daydreams about having Captain Marvel’s powers and then one day, she gets 'em!

Who’s starring in the series?

Iman Vellani is starring in the titular role after being scouted by Marvel Studios. She’s a newcomer and already looks like she is killing it.

She told Variety, ”the fact that the show is being made and they’re including this character in the MCU is [what’s important]. I don’t really have to go out of my way and talk about being a Muslim and being Pakistani — it all comes out in the show. People seeing a person like me involved in a project as big as this is, I think, inspiring enough.”

She’s joined by Saagar Shaikh as her older brother Aamir, Mohan Kapur and Zenobia Shroff (The Big Sick) as her parents Muneeba and Yusuf, Matt Lintz (The Walking Dead) as her best friend Bruno, and Aramis Knight (Into the Badlands) as the Red Dagger.

How does Ms. Marvel fit into the MCU?

Ms. Marvel will be featured in the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels (geez, that’s a mouthful of ‘Marvels’). It will feature Iman Vellani alongside Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, and is scheduled to premiere in February 2023.

When and where is Ms. Marvel streaming?

You can catch it on Disney+ from 8 June 2022.
