We Watched Barbieheimer - Here’s Our Thoughts and Which Movie You Should See First

One film is a work of art, and the other an excellent commentary on humanity. Which one is Barbie and Oppenheimer? 👀

What a great week for cinema – two of the biggest titles of the year are releasing this Thursday, and we were treated to an early screening of both.

Obv, we're gonna fill you in.

Barbie and Oppenheimer – otherwise known to the internet as ‘Barbieheimer’ – has everyone asking, “which movie do we see first?”, and probably the most important question – are they any good?

Find out what order we recommend watching them in, but firstly here’s what we thought of the two films.

Barbie.

Not only is Barbie incredibly fun (and has had some insane marketing), but it is so much more than its pink, bubbly vibes on the surface.

The film is very self-aware. It knows when it’s being silly, and fully embraces the Barbie brand – the good, the bad, and the controversial.

The self-awareness also adds to some dark humour in the film that initially makes you laugh, and then go “oh god, did they just go there... In a Barbie movie?”

You can tell Mattel were great sports in letting the Barbie movie go wild with their characters and brand. It made sense when at the Aussie press conference, director Greta Gerwig had said they probably broke the “rules” when it came to making a Barbie movie.

Margot Robbie is Barbie – she absolutely understood the assignment when it came to playing ‘Stereotypical Barbie’. I really can’t say anymore without spoiling the story, but she does the character justice in every way possible.

Ryan Gosling’s Ken is a scene-stealer through and through. He exuded ultimate Ken-ergy and played such an integral role in the themes of the film, and you couldn’t help but love him.

Barbie is an entertaining coming-of-age style film with great laughs, but also take your tissues - it hit us in the feels more than we were expecting.

Oppenheimer.

Have your snacks and drinks at the ready for the three-hour cinematic feast that is Oppenheimer.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer – the American scientist involved in the development of the atomic bomb.

It’s an intense watch, and Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer delivers an incredible performance.

The all-star cast is brilliant, but another stand-out performance in the film was from Robert Downey, Jr. as Lewis Strauss, who recently said to Deadline Oppenheimer is “the best film [he’s] ever been in”.

This film deserves to be watched on the HOYTS Xtreme Screen, hands down. The sound design and score alone will have you on the edge of your seat.

So, which movie do you watch first?

In our opinion, you gotta do Oppenheimer first.

After watching the dark, thrilling depiction of the creation of the atomic bomb, you’ll need that perfect change of scenery with the vibrant world of Barbieland.

Both all-star casts perform the roles of their careers, and the banter between the two casts on their joint release date has been quite wholesome to watch.

However, both films are going to leave you thinking about humanity in two very different ways – so which are you seeing first this weekend?
