The Most Anticipated Movies Coming Out in 2023, Ranked

What comes first on your list—“Oppenheimer” or “Barbie”?

You thought 2022 was a big ‘un for movies—but this year’s serving up some huge releases that’ll get you stuck to the cinema seats.

We cried to Elvis, contemplated life during Everything Everywhere All At Once, had a nostalgia trip with Top Gun and laughed throughout Thor: Love and Thunder. Now it’s time to clear your emotional palette for another rollercoaster in 2023.

Here are the movies we’re anticipating, in order from ‘pretty keen’ to ‘literally-can’t-wait-to-buy-tickets’.

10. M3GAN.

Yep, we’re getting another creepy doll movie.

But forget what you know about the antique Annabelle and Chucky sort. M3GAN is catching up with the times, bringing the modern AI boom to jump scares on the big screen.

This one is slated for a 12 January release date, so you can start the new year with a shudder.

9. Dune: Part Two.

The epic space opera that (in my humble opinion) is everything the recent Star Wars films could’ve and should’ve been, is getting the sequel it deserves.

Some big names are being thrown into the mix alongside Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, including Florence Pugh and Austin Butler.

This will be one to see on the big screen.

8. Oppenheimer.

When a Christopher Nolan movie is coming out, you best believe there’s going to by hype around it.

The celebrated director’s twelfth film follows the story of physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, who eventually developed the atomic bomb.

Whether or not it lives up to the hype—we’ll have to wait and see.

7. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

It’s been a hot minute since The Hunger Games fever circa. 2012 died down and fans stopped wearing their mockingjay pins.

But this year, it’ll be back with a vengeance. The prequel will follow Coriolanus Snow, the eventual president of Panem, when he is just 18 years old.

6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

We’ve missed Groot, Nebula, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Peter joining forces and fighting off enemies throughout the multiverse.

Aaand they’re back for Volume 3. This time, the Guardians are going on a dangerous mission to protect one of their members.

5. The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Our fave 8-bit plumber is being brought to life in stunning animation in April of 2023.

Mario will travel through an underground labyrinth with Luigi to save a captured princess.

Chris Pratt is voicing Mario, while Anya Taylor-Joy is playing Princess Peach. What’s not to love?

4. The Little Mermaid.

The teaser trailer for Disney’s latest princess film went viral back in September, with a stunning rendition of “Part of Your World” by relative Hollywood newcomer Halle Bailey.

We only have to wait ‘til May before we’ll be blasting this soundtrack on repeat.

3. Wonka.

It’s the prequel no one asked for, but everyone deserves.

Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka meeting the Oompa-Loompas for the first time? Yes, please.

2. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Back in 2018, we were shook, wowed and utterly blown away by the kaleidoscopic animated world of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Not only was it hilarious, heartfelt, and touching, but it had one killer soundtrack, too.

The sequel is swinging into theatres June 2023.

1. Barbie.

Director Greta Gerwig has brought us two brilliant female-led feature films Lady Bird and Little Women, and now she’s tackling the most ‘girly’ figure yet.

Honestly, we’re still not entirely sure what is going to transpire in the Barbie film. We’re hearing talk of multiple Ken’s, multiple Barbie’s, and a star-studded cast.

It comes out the same day as Oppenheimer, so you’re gonna have to choose your poison.
