Everything We Know About the 2023 Hunger Games Prequel

May the film be ever in our favour!

It’s been a hot minute since someone’s whistled those four sombre notes we’ve come to recognise as the symbol of The Hunger Games. But, in exciting news for fans of the franchise, it’ll be making a comeback next year.

It was announced in 2020 that a The Hunger Games prequel was in the works, based on the book The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. We finally have a release date and some more juicy info.

The film synopsis was released to The Hollywood Reporter and reads, “in this return to The Hunger Games, years before he would become the President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow sees a chance for a change in fortunes when he’s chosen to mentor a young tribute from District 12.”

That’s right—the iconic, white-haired villain played by Donald Sutherland in the original movies is getting his very own backstory.

If you’re itching for more context, we recommend checking out the book—but without giving too much away, the 10th annual Hunger Games are gonna look a little different from the 74th Games that Katniss took place in.

Catching Fire is the highest rated film in the franchise, so we’re stoked to hear the same director, Francis Lawrence, is at the helm of this latest addition. OG author Suzanne Collins has also joined the writers.

And for the news you wanna hear most—the film will be dropping 17 November 2023, so we really don’t have long at all before we need to book our midnight screenings and dig out our Mockingjay pins.
