"WandaVision" Nearly Had a "CSI"-Inspired Episode and I Want to See It Now

Marvel’s latest (and immensely popular) television series WandaVision, has entertained audiences for the last few months in the weirdest way.
Paying homage to sitcom tropes and television cliches, the series explores the story of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as they try to live a realistic life after the defeat of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
While the concept and delivery initially received mixed reviews from critics, the series seems to be a hit with both fans of Marvel and newcomers.
So, when the series officially ended on 5 March, a lot of us were pretty bummed to say the least.
Now, showrunner Jac Schaeffer—who also co-wrote Captain Marvel—has revealed in an interview with The New York Times that she had originally planned to include a CSI-inspired episode of the show, and man I wish they had given it a go.
Schaeffer wrote both the opening and closing episodes of WandaVision, including "Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience" and "The Series Finale".
While the CSI trope has definitely been done before, I think WandaVision could have certainly put an interesting spin on it.
Schaeffer told the New York Times that the darkness of a crime-styled episode would have been too different from the family-friendly sitcom traits that they were initially aiming for.
"In my pitch, the ‘rewind’ episode was a CSI episode. I thought, how interesting to do sitcom, sitcom, sitcom, and then shatter that and be in a different genre," she told the publication.
"But once we got in the writers’ room, we stayed with family sitcoms and sitcoms that were on the brighter, optimistic side of the spectrum because it is a fantasy. That meant things like All In The Family and Roseanne got shunted to the side.
"I had an episode that was The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and it was about Wanda’s work-life balance. Those are spectacular shows and say so much about our culture and ourselves. But we stayed in the zone of aspirational family sitcoms and that helped us find the focus of the show."
Essentially, the CSI style wasn’t aspirational enough, which makes sense considering other episodes of WandaVision are based on family faves like Bewitched, Malcolm in the Middle and The Dick Van Dyke Show.
So, 'cos we won't be getting a CSI-style WandaVision, here's the theme tune to keep you going.
