Vegemite Ice Cream Is a Thing and I Low-Key Want to Try It

Sweet and salty, amarite?

We all know Vegemite loves to try and include itself in all sorts of innocent recipes. Just take a look at their Facebook page and you’ll find Vegemite and Cheese Spaghetti, as well as Vegemite Hot Cross Buns.

They’re walking a thin line here.

While Aussies thought those combos were weird enough, a Victorian ice cream joint has gone viral (again) on social media for creating the behemoth of weird food combos: Vegemite Ice Cream.

Yes, you read that right. Dooley’s Ice Cream in Apollo Bay now makes and sells the creamy Vegemite flavoured dessert.

We’re used to just having the breakfast spread on savoury foods like toast or with cheese. Y’know, normal stuff. However, Dooley’s isn’t exactly afraid of breaking a few food rules here and there.

Well known for their weird and wonderful combos and flavours, they even sell Weetbix Ice Cream, and oh man, that’s giving me all the nostalgic feels.

While this sweet and salty treat is doing the rounds on social media—both for being insane and for heaps of people wanting to give it a go (me lol)—it’s actually been a part of Dooley’s menu for over a solid decade.

It’s not clear who initially brought the news back to light again but a post by @AusInTheUS on Facebook shows some pretty interesting POVs from less-than-keen commenters.

The verdict from those who have tried it seems to be that it’s similar to salted caramel in flavour: not too salty, but still there.

Dooley’s even won a silver award for the weird dessert at the Royal Melbourne Show back in 2012, so it must have something going for it.

This combo seems to be in the same tier as avocados or liquorice: people either love the idea or hate it.

All I know is I wouldn’t pass on it.
