University of NSW Student Dies After Taking Joyride In Shopping Trolley

An international student has died and his friend, visiting on holiday, has been seriously injured after taking a joyride in a shopping trolley this morning.

According to Mashable, the 28-year-old Swedes were estimated to have travelled at speeds up to 80 km/h in the trolley, which rolled down Coogee Bay Road in the Sydney suburb of Randwick at 12:20am.

Both men were ejected from the trolley after it struck a car.

The student, of the University of New South Wales, died at the scene after enduring serious head injuries. The other has been taken to hospital. He remains in a stable condition.

The driver of the car, 45, was uninjured. Though he produced a negative blood-alcohol reading right after the collision, he is undergoing further mandatory blood and drug testing.

The University of NSW’s President and Vice Chancellor, Professor Ian Jacobs, offered his condolences.

"The university is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our international students in an accident overnight in Randwick," he said.

"Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the young man's family and friends at this difficult time.

"The university is providing support services and is continuing to work with local police."

Meanwhile, Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate offered a word of warning to those roaming the streets late at night.

"If you're on the road, particularly in the early hours of the morning, regardless of whether you've been drinking or not, motor vehicles do kill people," he said.
