Four Killed In 'Thunder River Rapids' Accident At Dreamworld On The Gold Coast

Four people have died in a tragic accident at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast.

According to ABC News, two men and two women – aged from 32 to their early 40s – died following a malfunction on the Thunder River Rapids ride.

Witnesses told Channel 7 that their raft flipped on a mechanical section of track, where they were meant to be guided by steel rails through a chute. Two of the victims were thrown from their seats while the other two were trapped inside.

"[The victims] were assessed by Queensland ambulance personnel and had all sustained injuries that were incompatible with living,” said Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Gavin Fuller.

"A number of the staff that were here today from Queensland ambulance have been deeply affected by this terrible accident that's occurred today.”

The incident reportedly occurred at 2:20pm AEST.

Theme park attendees quickly left the park, which has been closed until further notice. A crime scene has been established at the ride.

Dreamworld chief executive Craig Davidson said the company is "deeply shocked and saddened by this and our hearts and our thoughts go to the families involved and to their loved ones".

The ride, which was opened in 1986, was almost the site of another fatality in April, when a man nearly drowned after being thrown from his seat.
