Tina Fey Will Use Her "Kimmy Schmidt" Hiatus To Finish That "Mean Girls" Musical

Bad news: the third season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will take a little longer to arrive, given star Ellie Kemper’s newly-announced pregnancy.

Incredible news: show-runner Tina Fey will use the hiatus to work on a Mean Girls musical.

Speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival, Fey said her extended summer break will be spent completing the musical with her husband, Jeff Richmond, and lyricist Nell Benjamin, Vulture reports.

(In case you’re unaware of Richmond’s bona fides, he’s the dude behind all the music from 30 Rock and Kimmy Schmidt; yes, from “Rural Juror” to “Peeno Noir”, and, of course, each show’s theme songs.)

It seems that Mean Girls the musical might even take some inspiration from Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway show of the moment Hamilton.

“I was joking around for my own amusement the other day, just going like, 'How does a Mathlete, chess king, son of a …,'" she told the fest’s attendees at a panel. (If you’ve not listened to the Hamilton soundtrack on loop, this will help explain the joke.)

Not to be greedy, Tina, but when can we expect UKS S3?

“Normally we would be starting up in June. This year we're going to start in August, shooting in October, and we'll be ready to come back with season three by the end of next May,” she said.
